Port Improvements Northern Expansion Phase III Slip D Bulkhead

Infrastructure

This project highlights Reliant’s expertise in heavy civil construction, including excavation, pile driving, bulkhead systems, and drainage infrastructure. The scope included construction of 1,641 linear feet of 24-inch steel bollard barriers driven to depths of up to 50 feet, reinforced with concrete structures and supported by a deep foundation system of precast concrete piles.

Project Scope and Highlights

  • Pile Driving: Installed approximately 105,000 square feet of steel sheet piles and 38,000 linear feet of 14-inch square precast concrete piles to form a robust bulkhead structure.
  • Bulkhead Construction: Constructed a durable bulkhead system incorporating 32 steel pipe mooring bollards to support active port operations and future expansion.
  • Drainage Infrastructure: Installed 350 linear feet of 24-inch reinforced concrete storm drain pipe to ensure efficient site drainage and water management.
  • Excavation and Embankment: Performed extensive earthwork to prepare the site, including grading, embankment construction, and removal of unsuitable materials.
  • Aggregate Surface Course: Placed and compacted 8,000 cubic yards of limestone aggregate and 11,500 cubic yards of lightweight aggregate to create a stable, long-lasting surface.
  • Structural Concrete: Installed 1,300 cubic yards of mass concrete to construct deadman anchors and other critical structural elements supporting the barrier system.

Foundation and Structural Systems

  • Precast Concrete Piles: Installed 588 precast concrete piles totaling 38,000 linear feet. Each pile was precisely positioned and driven to the required depth and angle to support deadman anchors and resist significant loading forces.
  • Steel Sheet Piles: Drove steel sheet piles to depths of up to 58.5 feet to create a continuous, interlocking barrier capable of resisting lateral earth pressures and hydraulic forces.
  • Lightweight Aggregate Backfill: Placed lightweight aggregate in four-foot lifts between sheet piles and deadman structures to enhance stability while reducing foundation loading.

Key Features

  • Innovative Engineering: Applied advanced construction techniques and materials to deliver long-term durability and performance.
  • Environmental Protection: Implemented sustainable practices to minimize environmental impacts during construction.
  • Safety and Compliance: Maintained strict adherence to all safety requirements and industry standards throughout execution.
